PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To irradiate a subject with auxiliary light agreeing with the wavelength region of light used in focus detection so as to perform accurate focus detection. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus 100 includes: a first focus detection means 8 receiving light in first and second wavelength regions and detecting the focus state of an imaging optical system; a second focus detection means 14 receiving the light in the second wavelength region and detecting the focus state of the imaging optical system; and a light emission control means 50 allowing light emitting means 409 and 401 for irradiating the subject with the auxiliary light to emit light when the focus state can not be detected by the focus detection means for performing detecting operation out of the first and the second focus detection means. The light emission control means allows the light emitting means to emit the auxiliary light in the first wavelength region when the focus state can not be detected by the first focus detection means, and allows the light emitting means not to emit the auxiliary light in the first wavelength region but to emit the auxiliary light in the second wavelength region when the focus state can not be detected by the second focus detection means.
