PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the man-hours (applicable man-hours) for map-setting in an experiment and the capacity consumption of memory in an ECU, with respect to an engine equipped with a variable valve timing mechanism (VCT). SOLUTION: While forming a target angle map M1 in which a target angle of the VCT is set according to a combination of engine rotation speed and intake pressure (Fig. (a)), before an experiment, a fuel injection amount map M2 in which a fuel injection amount is set according to a combination of the engine rotation speed and intake pressure (Fig. (b)), is formed. Combustion control operation is executed referring to a fuel injection amount from the fuel injection amount map M2 in accordance with the target angle of the VCT determined on the basis of the target angle map M1.
