The aim of the invention is to create a method for producing a rolling bearing ring and a rolling bearing ring which is sufficiently tough in the core region and has internal compressive stress in the edge region also when the cross-sectional edge is less than 20 mm long. Said aim is achieved by making the bearing ring (1) of a through-hardening low-alloy steel that has a carbon content of more than 0.5 wt.-% and a combined chromium, manganese, nickel, and molybdenum content ranging from 1.4 to 3.0 wt.-%. The bearing ring (1) is then subjected to a hardening treatment (12) during which the bearing ring (1) is heated to an external temperature (TE) ranging from 800°C to 880°C and is then quenched until reaching a temperature (TA) of less than 150°C.
