PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display apparatus and a liquid crystal television which include a backlight to be lighted up by a separately-excited inverter circuit and realize improvement of contrast in low brightness. SOLUTION: A microcomputer 50 obtains a brightness average value of image data from a brightness average value detecting circuit 22, directs an inverter circuit 62 to oscillate at a duty ratio corresponding to the obtained brightness average value, and directs an output processing circuit 33 to perform gamma correction with gamma correction data corresponding to the obtained brightness average value. When the brightness average value is lowered, the microcomputer 50 lowers the duty ratio to be output therefrom and lowers the brightness of the backlight 61. Moreover, when the brightness average value is lowered, the microcomputer 50 directs to perform gamma correction with gamma correction data for widening a brightness range.
