PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for alkali saponification of a polymer film without affecting formation of a coated film and orientation of liquid crystal molecules of an oriented film and a liquid crystal molecular layer which will be coated afterward by extracting hydrophobic components from the polymer film with an organic solvent, surface saponified cellulose ester films and optical films using the same. SOLUTION: In the method for alkali saponification of a polymer film comprising a coating step for coating an aqueous alkaline solution to the polymer film, a saponification reaction step for saponifying the polymer film with the aqueous alkaline solution coated in the coating step, a reaction stopping step for stopping the saponification reaction and a washing step for washing the aqueous alkaline solution with a washing solution, the washing solution contains at least a surfactant, and the amount of the surfactant included in the washing solution is 0.5-5.0 times than that of the hydrophobic component extracted from the polymer film in the saponification solution after the saponification step.
