PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vinyl polymer that exhibits excellent solubility in an aliphatic and/or alicyclic hydrocarbon solvent and is useful as a binder resin for a coating capable of forming a coating film having good performances such as external appearances, hardness and the like, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The vinyl polymer is obtained by polymerizing a monomer composition having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 20-70°C calculated using equation (1) below and a solubility parameter (δ) of 18.60-18.90 (J/cm<SP>3</SP>)<SP>1/2</SP>calculated using equation (2) below, and makes a binder resin for a coating capable of forming a good coating film. 1/Tg=Σ(w<SB>i</SB>/Tg<SB>i</SB>) (1).δ=Σ(m<SB>i</SB>δ<SB>i</SB>) (2). In equation (1), w<SB>i</SB>is a mass fraction of a monomer (i) and Tg<SB>i</SB>is the Tg of a homopolymer of the monomer (i).
