摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor for vacuum ultraviolet excitation being reduced in the luminance deterioration during a heat treatment process and with time, having a wide color reproduction range and high luminance, to provide a rare gas discharge lamp having a wide color reproduction range, high luminous flux and a slight reduction in luminous flux with time when used as a backlight of LCD and a backlight for LCD, having high luminance and a slight reduction in luminance with time. SOLUTION: The aluminum-gallate phosphor for vacuum ultraviolet excitation is represented by a composition formula: (M<SB>1-a</SB>, Mn<SB>a</SB>)(Al<SB>1-b</SB>, Ga<SB>b</SB>)<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>(wherein M is at least one of Mg, Ca, Sr and Zn; and a and b are each a number to satisfy conditions of 0.0005≤a≤0.3 and 0.02≤b≤0.17). The rare gas discharge lamp using a phosphor mixture composed of at least the phosphor, a red luminous phosphor and a blue luminous phosphor as a fluorescent screen is a light source for a backlight for LCD.
