A throttle valve is provided to throttle a stream of exhaust gas flowing through a pipe (7). A one-piece restoring spring prestresses the throttle valve into a closed position. Throttle valve in the pipe can be pivoted about a pivot axis. Valve partially closes a predetermined cross-sectional area of the pipe. In open position, it releases the pressure of the exhaust gas in the pipe against the spring force of the restoring spring. Restoring spring is supported on the throttle valve or on the lever via either a single central contact point or a line of contact parallel to the pivot axis. An independent claim is included for an exhaust system for an internal combustion engine.
