TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER FOR OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

<p>There is provided improved transceivers for both Spectrum Sliced Wavelength Division Multiplexing (SS-WDM) and incoherent Optical Code Division Multiplexing Access (OCDMA) systems, and capable of enhancing the quality of the received signal before photo-detection. A balanced receiver design cancels the intra-channel crosstalk as well as the additive amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise in the amplified SS-WDM case. The combination of the optical amplifier transmitter and balanced receiver reduces excess intensity noise (also called beat noise and phase induced intensity noise) in the case of both WDM and OCDMA systems with optical incoherent broadband sources and also in the case of OCDMA systems using coherent sources.</p>
