Disclosed is a method for producing a thermoplastic copolymer, wherein a copolymer (B) containing an unsaturated carboxylic acid alkyl ester unit (i), an unsaturated carboxylic acid unit (ii) and a glutaric acid anhydride unit (iii) represented by the general formula (1) below is reacted with an esterifying agent. Also disclosed are a thermoplastic copolymer having high heat resistance, colorless transparency and excellent low water absorption, which is greatly reduced in weight loss during heating retention, and a method for producing such a thermoplastic copolymer.
