PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a "map image display device" which displays a map image on an appropriate contraction scale considering the intention of its user. SOLUTION: A controller 102 inside the main part 10 of a car navigation system 100 determines whether or not the position of its own car is in a parking lot on a map image. Next, the controller 102 determines whether or not the contraction scale of the map image is a contraction scale maximum necessary for displaying the whole of the parking lot, when the car position is inside the parking lot on the map image. Moreover, when the contraction scale is not the maximum contraction scale capable of displaying the whole of the parking lot, the controller 102 changes the contraction scale of the map image to the maximum contraction scale capable of displaying the whole of the parking lot, and allows the display device to display the map image.
