The controller (SG) has an interface (IF) supplying a signal of an acceleration sensor technology (BS) to a vehicle front. An integrator integrates the signal to a DV-signal. A determination module determines oscillation energy of the signal. A fusion module fuses the DV-signal and the oscillation energy to form a fusion signal. A control circuit (FLIC) controls a personal protection unit (PS) based on the fusion signal. The fusion signal is determined from the product of the oscillation energy and a weight factor. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a personal protection unit.
