PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lighten the load of processing associated with face detection on a device and to make the face detection processing fast. SOLUTION: A 0°(lateral shooting) mode based upon the direction of an image during face detection as a basic direction, a +90°(longitudinal shooting) mode wherein the direction of the image is rotated clockwise by 90°, and a -90°(longitudinal shooting) mode wherein the direction of the image is rotated counterclockwise are provided as modes of face detection. Only when a face of even one person can not be detected in the 0°(lateral shooting) mode, the mode is switched to the +90°(longitudinal shooting) mode and face detection is performed. Only when a face of even one person can not be detected either, the mode is switched to -90°(longitudinal shooting) mode and face detection is carried out. When a face can be detected in one of the modes (YES at one of S4, S10, and S14), face detection is repeated in the mode.
