A device for performing repetitive operations on a strip or strips of material moving along a predetermined path, comprises two endless conveyers arranged one on each side of the path with one run of each conveyer extending adjacent to and parallel with the path, means independent of the material for driving the conveyers at the same speed as the material, a pair of co-operating members mounted one on each conveyer, means for maintaining the members in constant alignment with each other in a plane at right angles to the path and means for periodically moving at least one of the members in a plane towards the other of the members co-operatively to engage the material to perform an operation thereon while moving with the material. As shown superposed strips of pliable plastic material 11 are sealed by co-operating heated members 15, 16 to form bags. The device 10 is mounted on a base 12 and includes the sealing head members 15, 16 between which the strips 11 are fed by rollers 13, 14. The heads 15, 16 are movable towards and away from the strips 11 and are actuated by chains 17, 171, driven continuously by a motor 28 via chains and sprockets 26, 241, 231, 251 and gears 27, 271. The heads are aligned by means of rods 38 which extend through bearings to the heads. Two pairs of horizontially aligned guide rods 47, 471 are also provided on the frame of the device. The heads 15, 16 are fastened to chains 17, 171 through clamps 40 which are rotatably attached to rods 41 on the heads and to a link of chains 17, 171. The heads 15, 16 are forced into sealing engagement by the action of rollers 43, 431, which move over adjustable pressure plates 44, 441 mounted on the main frame. The rollers 43, 431 are attached to the heads 15, 16 by L-shaped clamps 45. The heads are provided with electric heating elements 33, 331. which are connected by conductors 52, and a thermal couple 53 indicates and controls the temperature of the sealing members.
