A mobile terminal supporting various character input types and a method for inputting a character in a mobile terminal are provided to reduce a time for recognizing a new input method by inputting a character, a symbol, and a number through a desired input method. An input unit(110) includes a first keypad and a second keypad in order to input by touch. A converting unit(130) converts a key event generated from an input unit in order to comply with an input mode corresponding to a second key pad. An output unit(150) outputs character data corresponding to the converted key event. A memory(190) stores a program of the predetermined automata for displaying the second key pad.
