Vinyl chloride polymers contain as a plasticizer a trialkyl 9(10)-phosphono-stearate of formula <FORM:0885956/IV (a)/1> where R and R1 are alkyl and x is 7 or 8. (For preparation see Group IV(b)). Specified polymers are vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, poly(vinyl chloride) and vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymers.ALSO:The invention comprises trialkyl 9(10)-phosphonostearates of formula <FORM:0885956/IV (b)/1> where R and R1 are alkyl and x is 7 or 8. They are prepared by heating a dialkyl phosphonate (dialkyl hydrogen phosphite) of formula <FORM:0885956/IV (b)/2> with an alkyl oleate in the presence of a decomposing peroxy compound, particularly t-butyl perbenzoate, in an atmosphere of inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. The reaction temperature is preferably at least about 100 DEG C. suitably 100 DEG C.-110 DEG C. The product is a mixture of the 9-and 10- derivatives. The esters of the invention are plasticisers (see Group IV (a)). |
