886,021. Cooking granular vegetable foodstuffs. CARCASSONNE-LEDUC., R. P. C. May 16, 1958 [Dec. 18, 1957], No. 15782/58. Addition to 779,576, improved upon by 794,538. Class 58. The process and apparatus used for the continuous cooking and drying of rice, as disclosed in the parent Specification and Specification 794,538, are modified so that they can be used for other granular vegetable foodstuffs, for example, grains of wheat, barley, oats, maize, and semolina, and seeds such as lentils, peas, and beans. The foodstuff is fed by an Archimedean screw 45, Figs. 1 and 1a, from a stoneremoving device 55 or hopper 56 into water contained in a soaking tank 50, heated, if desired, by a steam coil 53. The wetted foodstuff is removed from the tank by an endless moving belt 57 and deposited on a second endless moving belt 60, on which the water penetrates completely into the foodstuff. The soaked foodstuff then passes between adjustable rollers 64, which may be fluted, and through a hopper 65 on to a third perforated endless moving belt 66, which carriers the foodstuff successively through a cooking chamber 68 comprising two compartments 68a and b, into which live steam is fed through pipes 73a and b and distributed by perforated tubes 72<SP>1</SP>a and b to escape through outlets 70, and a drying chamber 69 comprising four compartments 69a, 6, c and d, to which hot air is fed through pipes 74a, b, c and d, and from which it escapes through outlets 71. The cooked and dried foodstuff passes on to an inclined table 98 and then to a packing device. In compartment 69a are arranged three rotary mixers each comprising a shaft 76, Figs. 1a and 2, carrying diametrically-opposed arms 81 on the ends of which are mounted stretched wires 82. These mixers are rotated so that the wires pass through the foodstuff in the same direction as it is moving. A rotary stirrer 75, as described in Specification 794,538, is also provided in compartment 69a. In compartment 69b are arranged two rotary lifters each comprising a shaft 84, Figs. 1a and 4, carrying three pairs of diametrically-opposed arms 86 having scoops 87 at their ends. The shaft 83 may also carry three additional pairs of arms 86a provided with scoops 87a. The rotary lifters are rotated so as to pass the scoops through the foodstuff in the opposite direction to that in which it is moving and transfer it into the hopper 89 of a shelling device comprising two oppositely-rotating rollers 90 covered with rubber or like material 91. The foodstuff passes through the adjustable nip between the rollers. In each of compartments 69c and d are arranged two rotary mixers each comprising a shaft 94, Figs. 1a and 5, carrying diametrically-opposed arms 96 having anglepieces 97 at their ends. These mixers are rotated so that the angle-pieces pass through the foodstuff in the same direction as it is moving. The last compartment 69d may be supplied with cooling air at room temperature. |
