A method and an apparatus for treating waters of liquid residues including an electrochemical pre-treatment stage (2) and a stage of electrocoagulation-flocculation with subsequent separation of flocculated solid matter (3). Physical, chemical and/or electrochemical transformation of the contaminants during the electrochemical pretreatment stage facilitates the contaminant removal by electrocoagulation-flocculation. The method includes optionally a filtering stage (1A) and an additional electrochemical treatment stage (4) performed after the removal of flocculated solid matter.
