WASHING MACHINE AND METHOD FOR SENSING A QUANTITY OF LAUNDRY

A washing machine and a laundry amount sensing method thereof are provided to improve the sensing precision by accelerating to sense the laundry amount at the point where the slope of speed ripple by the unbalance of laundry is constant. A washing machine includes a drum receiving laundry, a motor rotating the drum, and a controller which senses the speed of the drum according to the motor driving and extracts the speed ripple, accelerates the drum to the predetermined speed and senses the weight of laundry in the drum when the slope of the extracted speed ripple reaches the predetermined reference value. A laundry amount sensing method of the washing machine is as follows. The drum speed according to the motor driving is detected and the speed ripple is extracted. The slope of the extracted speed ripple is computed and whether the computed slope has reached the predetermined reference value is determined. The drum is accelerated to the predetermined speed and the weight of laundry in the drum is sensed when the slope has reached the reference value.
