Methods and systems for establishing relationships and creating links between entities (such as users, devices, organisations etc) are described. The method comprises receiving at a first device 110 over a short range wireless link, an identifier which relates to a nearby device 116. This identifier is sent to a server 112 associated with the first device and at least an identifier for a data object is also sent to the server. The server makes the data object available to an entity 118 associated with the nearby device by associating the identifier for that entity and the identifier for the data object. The data object may comprise a packet of data (e.g. a file or document), a link to data stored elsewhere or a collection of data (e.g. a collection of contact details). The nature of the relationship established is determined by the data packet. Embodiments describe a system for mutually authenticating links between devices capable of short range communication (Bluetooth, WiFi, infrared etc), each having an associated server database storing unique identifiers and between which authorisation data is transmitted. A first wireless device searches for proximal wireless devices and graphically displays them. On selection of a displayed device, an IP address of a server is determined from which access authorisation to the device is requested. The server authenticates the user of the first device by requesting verification from the displayed device or from a server associated with the first device. On verification the user of the first device may access personal data associated with the user of the device, control the device or access a service offered by the server. Embodiments also relate to wirelessly unlocking vehicles, billboard advertising, cash point machines, currency transfers, voting and banking. |
