The reductive coupling is effected with Ti, Sn, Pb, Au, Tl, P, As, Sb, Bi or Te. The organic cpds. involved are which contain halogen (Cl, Br or I, pref. Br) on a primary or sec. (pref. primary) C atom, and are pref, a cpd. of formula: X-C(R1)(R2)-C(R3)(R4)(R5) (where X is Cl, Br or I; R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 can be H or an opt. substd. alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or alkenyl; most pref. R1-4 are H, and R5 is a functional gp. which activates the alpha, beta-double bond, e.g. -CN, COOR6, CONHR6, CINR6R6, COOH, CONH2, NO2, COR6 or SOR2R6 where R6 is a C1-6 alkyl gp.). The metals are used as cpds. in less stable oxidn. states and are used as organo-metallic cpds., organic salts, chelates, etc. and may be used as mixtures of several of these cpds. Process is esp. suitable for prodn. of adiponitrile by reduction of 3-bromo, 3-chloro- or 3-iodo propionitrile or mixtures thereof, pref. in presence of acrylonitrile at 0-250 degrees C.
|
