Effective use of an inherently owned wide output range of a solid state image pickup element is to widen a dynamic range and obtains a less hue rotation video image. By making use of the feature that low exposure set by a sensitizing mode makes a margin up to a saturating electric charge large, RGB signals with wide dynamic ranges including signal components of an object on a high brightness side are obtained. First, the signals are subjected to a G correction close to a power G and, then, a color space conversion to make a brightness signal and a color difference signal. Non-linear compression processing is carried out for the brightness signal to be included in a prescribed gray scale while a hue rotation reduction by a power gamma correction and a color difference matrix clipping are applied to the color difference signal.
