ADDITIVE FOR NON-AQUEOUS ELECTROLYTE AND SECONDARY BATTERY USING THE SAME

An additive for non-aqueous liquid electrolyte is provided to improve the safety of a battery in overcharging by not using an internal pressure-increasing material which is oxidized at the overcharged voltage and directly generates the gas, as a electrolyte additive. An electrolyte for a secondary battery comprises (a) an electrolyte salt, (b) an electrolyte solvent, and (c) a compound which is oxidized at the operation voltage or greater of positive electrode and generates the heat. The compound causes the gas generation due to decomposition and evaporation of the electrolyte-constituting component through the oxidation heat. The amount of heat generated due to the oxidation of the compound (c) is a range which generates decomposition and evaporation of the electrolyte-constituting component or more and a range causing the structure distrupture of the positive active material or less. The compound (c) is a compound responding with reversible redox shuttle.
