A light irradiating method, an optical recording medium, and a record/playback apparatus are provided to improve SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) in the recording operation and reproduce recorded signal appropriately by generating return beam only in the reproducing operation, not in the recording operation. An optical recording medium includes a recorded layer(51) in which signal is recorded, a 1/4 wave plate formed on the lower side of the recorded layer, a polarization plate formed on the lower side of the 1/4 wave plate, and a reflective film formed on the lower side of the 1/4 wave plate. A light irradiating method for recording/reproducing an optical recording medium includes a light emission step for emitting the light to be irradiated to the optical recording medium, and a wave plate driving step for operating the 1/4 wave plate inserted into an optical system which guides the emitted light to the optical recording medium in order to have an angle difference between the optical axis direction in the recording operation and the reproducing operation.
