PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve character visibility on a display device.

SOLUTION: This display controller is provided with: a storage means 7-1 for storing binary bitmap data 13 representing a character part and the other margin parts to specify the shape of the character; a first adjustment means 3-1 for adjusting a contributing ratio for specifying luminance of each pixel on a display device 2 corresponding to the margin parts around the character part of the bitmap data 13; a second adjustment means 3-2 for reducing the contributing ratio corresponding to at least one edge side of the bitmap data 13 adjusted by the first adjustment means 3-1 according to a prescribed decreasing rate; and a luminance output means 3-3 for setting and outputting the luminance of each pixel of the character displayed by the display device 2 in accordance with the contributing ratio so as to make luminance come close to luminance corresponding to a character color preset in the character part when the contributing ratio is high and make the luminance come close to luminance of a background color preset in the margin part when the contributing ratio is low.
