PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium driver capable of detecting ejection and loading of a recording medium regardless the power ON/OFF and shortening time required for reading medium information of the recording medium, when the medium is not discharged nor loaded, and to provide a method of acquiring the medium information of the recording medium. SOLUTION: The recording medium driver includes a medium information storage part 212 for recording the medium information on the recording medium, and a detection part 206 whose status is changed over according to the discharge and the loading of the medium when the power is turned ON and OFF for detecting the discharge and the loading of the medium when the power is ON. The medium information storage part stores the latest medium information which has already been recorded as the medium information of the loaded recording medium, until the detection part detects the discharge or the loading of the medium; and when the detection part detects the discharge or the loading of the medium, the medium information of the recording medium is newly stored as the information of a new recording medium.
