PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize a time lag which is made before photographing actually takes place after the depression of a release button, as less as possible, while detecting the characteristic information of a subject. SOLUTION: If the characteristic information of a subject is not detected by a detecting means before the operation of the release switch, control is performed such that the detecting means detects the characteristic information of the subject before a lens moves to the place where it starts moving after the operation of the release switch.
