A high-intensity focused ultrasound device has an applicator surface, a l iquid-containing bolus or expandable chamber acting as a heat sink, and a so urce of ultrasonic vibrations, the applicator surface being a surface of a f lexible wall of the bolus, the source of ultrasonic vibrations being in oper ative contact with the bolus. The applicator surface is disposable in contac t with a surface of a target body, the source is energizable to produce ultr asonic vibrations focused at a predetermined focal region inside the target body, and a temperature of liquid in the bolus is controlled while the appli cator surface is in contact with the surface to control temperature elevatio n in the target body between the focal region and the surface of application .
