PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent data from being written or erased in a region other than the region to record data therein, while preventing magnetic flux from being saturated in the middle of a magnetic path. SOLUTION: An upper magnetic pole layer 13 includes a first portion 13A of which one terminal is disposed on an air bearing surface 30, and which has a fixed width equal to a recording track width and includes a magnetic pole portion; and a second portion 13B which is linked to another terminal of the first portion 13A and includes a yoke portion. In a portion where the first portion 13A of the upper magnetic pole layer 13 and a lower magnetic pole layer 8 are confronted with a recording gap layer 9 therebetween, the widths of the first portion 13A, of the recording gap layer 9 and of a portion of the lower magnetic pole layer 8 at a side of the recording gap layer 9 are made equal. In the first portion 13A of the upper magnetic pole layer 13, thickness in an area 13Ae from the air bearing surface 30 to a predetermined position is made smaller than thickness in another portion of the upper magnetic pole layer 13 adjacent to the area 13Ae.
