A pill crusher (10) having a rack (107) and pinion (108) advancing a platen (116). Pill crushers are used to crush pills into powder for various medicinal reasons, such as ease of mixing or dosing. A rack (107) on a slide way (107b) is linearly advanced by rotational movement of a pinion (108) on a handle (115). The slide way (107b) is attached to a platen (116) that advances towards an anvil (117). A pill in a pouch placed adjacent the anvil (117) is crushed by the advancing platen (116). In one embodiment, a shaped anvil insert surface (217s) is mated to a complementary shaped platen surface (216s) and aids in crushing the pill. The present invention provides an efficient and sturdy pill crusher for commercial as well as personal use.
