1,244,214. Tape cassettes. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 12 July, 1968 [14 July, 1967], No. 33420/68. Heading G5R. A twin-spool cassette for tape including a portion of different light transmissivity from the record-carrying portion contains a reflector 42 co-operable with a light beam and photosensor to control drive to the tape. The portion may be produced by removing the tape coating or by a separate strip at, or between, the ends. As shown, a reversible cassette contains two reflectors 42 associated with light sources 66 and photodiodes 68, for controlling winding in both directions. The tape spools are rim-driven by rollers 60 and the pinch roller 50 is journalled in a spring-loaded bracket 80 slidable within the cassette and carrying anti-spill brake blocks 92. The cassette is slid into the operative position where the pinch roller shaft 76 locates in forks in a bracket 74 (also Fig. 6, not shown) embracing the capstan 62.
