PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image forming apparatus, in which sheet pressurizing parts are opened and closed according to the intention of a user. SOLUTION: When the image of a sheet is read, the sheet pressurizing part 100 for pressing the sheet mounted on mounting base glass 112 from above is opened and closed by a motor-driven opening/closing part 400. When external force in the opening/closing direction is added to the sheet pressurizing part 100 upon opening and closing the sheet pressurizing part 100 by the motor-driven opening/closing part 400, the acting direction and magnitude of the external force is detected by an external force detection part. According to the acting direction and magnitude of the external force detected by the external force detection part, an opening/closing speed change part also changes the opening/closing speed of the sheet pressurizing part 110 opened/closed by the motor-driven opening/closing part 400.
