PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether or not a character image to be recognized is useful for determining a vertical direction with less amount of computational complexity by using a simple determination method. SOLUTION: A determination method comprises: an image segmenting step (step S11) for segmenting an image for one character from a document image; a feature information generation step (step S12) for generating a feature vector with respect to the image for the segmented character; a step (step S13) for generating a feature vector which is obtained by rotating a feature vector before rotation by a prescribed angle; a step (step S14) for calculating similarity from a distance between feature vectors before and after the rotation; and steps (steps S15 to S19) for determining symmetry of the character to be recognized by comparing the calculated similarity with a preset threshold.
