PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus where deposition such as discharge product on an image carrier is completely removed without prolonging waiting time anew, which is compact and inexpensive and which achieves high-quality image formation. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises an image forming means 1 where a plurality of image forming units are successively arranged to form a plurality of toner images; an intermediate transfer body 2 to which the toner image formed by the image forming means is intermediately transferred by a transfer means 1e while it is turnably held; an intermediate transfer body contacting/separating means 3 which makes the intermediate transfer body contact with/separate from the rotating image carrier 1b in the selected and specified image forming unit 1a; and a deposition removing means 4 which removes the deposition on the image carrier in another image forming unit while the image forming unit 1a selected and specified by the intermediate transfer body contacting/separating means is forming the image.
