A conventional contrast correction as a preprocessing for detecting a face in an image has problems with an extensive processing computation caused by requiring the square mean of an image or division by a dispersion value and requiring a computation to all pixels of a local portion. A face detection apparatus comprises an input image selecting section for selecting a local area from an image, a filter selecting section for selecting a filter for detection, a filter computing section for performing a filter computation of the input image of the selected local area by using the output from the input image selecting section and the filter selecting section, a normalization section for investigating the distribution of the pixel value of the input image from the input image selecting section, a conversion table for determining a normalization factor on the basis of the distribution information, a multiplier for multiplying the result of the output of the filter computing section by the normalization factor, and a face detection section for judging whether the face is included in the input image and outputting the result of the detection.
