<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide automatic layout and format setting of content in design of a specific medium, and automatic format setting in the change of design. <P>SOLUTION: A three-way separation of information in a document 32 includes content, design and media aspects. This division supports automatic rendering to multiple forms of media such as print, Intranet, Internet, and OLE embedding. A data structure of information has three tree structures. A design tree structure 54 represents design of configuration 38 and includes design components. A content tree structure 52 represents the content of configuration 38 and includes content elements.
