PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of forming a dot pattern which can easily be extracted (recognized) without causing deterioration of an image, an image reader, and a control method. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus which forms an image on a recording medium includes an adding means of adding the dot pattern for identifying the image forming apparatus having formed the image to image data constituting the image, and a control means of controlling addition conditions of addition of the dot pattern based upon color information on the image data.
