<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital multi-functioned machine that improves the convenience when designating an additional area for embedding a symbol image in a read image. <P>SOLUTION: The digital multi-functioned machine comprises: an image reading part 2 for generating a read image by optically reading an original; an operation displaying part 13 for displaying the read image on a screen; an encoding processing part 27 for encoding designation information designated by a user to generate a symbol image; an area designating part 28 for designating an additional area for embedding the symbol image in the read image on the basis of a user's operation; an image combining part 29 for embedding the symbol image in the additional area to generate a combined image; an image extracting part 24 for decoding the read image and extracting an embedded image which has the same color as the symbol image and is encoded by the same method on the result of decoding; and an area determining part 25 for determining an allowed area that can be designated in the additional area on the basis of the result of extraction by the image extracting part 24.
