In a machine for laminating material in which one or each outer lamina is a thermoplastic foil and is embossed with cylindrical depressions the latter are formed by passing the laminate over a roller which has longitudinal rows of valve controlled holes connected within the roller to a vacuum source. In the embodiment shown a thermoplastic web 4 is laminated to a thermoplastic web 7 after the web 4 has passed around a heated embossing roller 1 which, as shown in Fig. 4, incorporates valve controlled vacuum orifices 13. Control of the orifices 13 is effected through the interengagement of a suitably channelled and apertured plate 20 rotating with the roller 1 and a stationary twopart cover-plate 27, 28, incorporating air nipples 34, 36. The lamination is effected in the bight of roller 1 and a cooling roller 2. |
