[Also in Division G3] A machine tool comprises a housing 25 having a rotatable spindle 16, a storage rack 29 for holding tools 37 and presenting them at an exchange position wherein the axis of the tool is at a right angle to the axis of the spindle, and an interchanger element 33 rotatable about an axis that bisects the angle between the spindle axis and the axis of the tool in the exchange position. The spindle 16 is slidable horizontally with the housing 25 along guides 26 of a saddle 21 movable vertically along guides 22 of a column 19 that is movable horizontally along a base 17. The storage rack 29 comprises a continuous chain. In one embodiment the interchanger element comprises a rotatable shaft 32 housing a reciprocable piston and rod (44), (46) (Fig. 2, not shown) which operates by means of racks and gear quadrants to rotate hinge pins to which the arms 31 and 34 are attached. The shaft is rotated 180 degrees by means of an annular chamber and a vane type piston. Each arm 31, 34 includes clamps for gripping and releasing a tool holder. The clamp comprises a spring biased toggle mechanism (85), (86), (104), which expands gripping parts (82), (83) within a dove tail slot in the tool holders. The clamp is released automatically when the arms reach the end of their pivoting movement. At the tool ready position of the tool store the replaced tool is gripped by a detent ball lock (99), (100) which is automatically released and closed by movement of the arms 31, 34. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the arms are pivoted about eccentric hinge pins (139), (143) which are rotated by levers (136), (137) attached to a reciprocable piston-rod (131). The tool holder clamping comprises a spring biased, lever operated movable jaw which is released as an arm approaches the end of its pivoting movement at the spindle or tool exchange position. The machine tool is numerically controlled and includes control means (Fig. 6, not shown) for recording and memorizing the positions and changes of positions, of individual tools. The control means includes e.g. a tape programme control system, a memory data register, and an accumulator and comparator unit. |
