PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the hot lock of an electric drive mechanism in assist restart with the electric drive mechanism, resulting from pre-ignition in an upon-stop intake stroke cylinder 12C. SOLUTION: When predetermined engine stopping conditions are established, an engine 1 is automatically stopped. When predetermined restarting conditions are established after automatic stop, the engine 1 is reversed once with the combustion of mixture in a upon-stop compression stroke cylinder 12A which is in a compression stroke during stopping the engine and then the engine 1 is restarted with the combustion of the mixture in a upon-stop expansion stroke cylinder 12B which is in an expansion stroke during stopping the engine. In this case, when determining that a piston 13 in the upon-stop intake stroke cylinder 12C which is in an intake stroke during stop cannot exceed a compression upper dead center and the engine 1 is reversed at a predetermined determination value N1, starting assist of a starter 36 is prohibited until the engine 1 is stopped, at least.
