PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for operating a blast furnace with which when cold iron source is used as a part of raw materials charged into the blast furnace, the operation of the blast furnace can economically and stably be performed. SOLUTION: In the method for operating the blast furnace by charging iron ore P1 and a prescribed reducing material P2 and also, a prescribed quantity of cold iron source P3 into the blast furnace 10; as the above cold iron source P3, a block-type cold pig iron which casts as the size for being chargeable into the blast furnace by using beforehand a mold having the prescribed size, is used. In this way, the operation of the blast furnace when the cold iron source is used as a part of the raw material for charging into the blast furnace, can economically and stably be performed.
