PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cross sectional structure for a structural member capable of attaining high strength and light weight. SOLUTION: The cross sectional structure for the structural member 1 has compression side surfaces 10a, 12a and 13a arranged in a compression stress field of bending; a tension side surface 11a arranged in a tension stress field of bending; and walls 10b, 11b for connecting the compression side surfaces 10a, 12a and 13a and the tension side surface 11a. A neutral axis A of bending is arranged near the compression side surfaces 10a, 12a and 13a, and in the compression side surfaces 10a, 12a and 13a, material strength is preferably large and/or a plate thickness is thick as compared with the tension side surface 11a.
