In the preparation of vinyl acetate by reacting ethylene and oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas at high temperature and pressure in an acetic acid solution or suspension containing as catalyst a palladium salt, a copper salt and an acetate of alkali or alkaline earth metals the by-products in the reaction product are absorped at a pressure of from 20 to 70 atmospheres in solutions containing not less than 40% by weight of acetic acid, the gas dissolved in the acetic acid is separated and the ethylene therein recovered. |
