An image display apparatus and a method of controlling brightness of the image display apparatus are provided to control the brightness of an LED for informing that a current state is a standby mode according to time. A standby power supply unit(150) supplies standby power(5V). A PWM output unit(130) generates and outputs a pulse width modulation frequency. A power setting unit(140) sets an output voltage value based on the pulse width modulation frequency outputted through the PWM output unit. A light emitting unit emits light having brightness corresponding to voltage supplied through the standby power supply unit and voltage set through the power setting unit. A timer determining unit(110) determines current time information.
