A high inertia flywheel 2 for a vehicle comprises a hub 4, eg of steel, and a rim 6, eg of wound carbon fibre composite. The flywheel 2 is contained in an evacuated housing having end caps 50, 52. Annular rings 54a, 56a are provided on flanges 62, 64 on end caps 50, 52 on each side of the flywheel, whereby, on oscillation of the flywheel, a contact surface 66, 68 of the flywheel contacts against an annular ring 54a, 56a, thus causing friction which controls the oscillation. The annular rings may have radially outwardly directed flanges (76, 78 figs 3,5) or radially inwardly directed flanges (88, 90 figs 4,6). A control system may detect onset of failure of the flywheel and cause a reduction in its speed, eg by injecting water or oil into the housing. |
