A combustion process for burning fuel in a combustion chamber includes supplying fuel and air to a burner 1 associated with the combustion chamber 7. The burner arrangement may includes a fuel supplier 2 having a central fuel supply passage 3 with a circular fuel supply nozzle 4 of exit diameter 'd'. An annular passage 14 between an inner surface 10 and a tapered front end 5 of the fuel supplier may define the air supply path. The amount of air supplied is at least as much as is required for stoichiometric combustion of the fuel and additionally for subsequent dilution of the combustion process in the combustion chamber. The fuel and all the air are injected from the burner directly into the combustion chamber in a substantially unmixed state as a fuel stream within an air stream, such that fuel burns as a diffusion flame. The thickness of the fuel stream can have a high surface-to-volume ratio at or close to the stoichiometric fuel/air ratio. Alternatively, no part of the fuel stream emerging from the burner fuel supply nozzle is more than about 1.75mm from the boundary between the fuel stream and the air stream. The combustion process can be performed in burners and combustors that take many different forms, and as such may be used in gas turbine combustors or combustion chambers of steam raising boilers. The fuel may be gaseous, a vaporized liquid, or a pulverized solid fuel. |
