An insert 12 for a core having a composite body 10 comprises an outer surface that in use is inserted into a core body and an inner surface that in use is engaged and driven by a chuck, the core having a restraining structure that resists the transmission of radial forces applied to the core body in use so as to prevent distortion of the core body. The structure may be in the form of ribs 14 or may be due to the inner surface having a polygonal profile wherein the vertices engage with the chuck. The insert is preferably manufactured from a self-healing polymer with a high elastic modulus and resistance to wear and damage. In use, a web winding core may comprise a tubular core body with an insert disposed at each end. |
