An expandable polystyrene(EPS) bead is provided to improve adiabatic property and fire retardant characteristic, and to realize excellent workability and inexpensive costs. An expandable polystyrene(EPS) bead comprises metal or non-metallic oxide having the particle diameter of 1~50 mum as a flame retardant; metal or non-metallic hydroxide; and 10-60 weight% of one or at least two kinds selected from silicate, borate, and carbonate. The metal oxide comprises a ferric oxide, aluminium oxide, zinc oxide and magnesium oxide; the metal hydroxide comprises magnesium hydroxide and aluminium hydroxide; and the non-metallic hydroxide comprises calcium hydroxide.
