[Also in Division C1] A process for the production of an alcohol comprises hydrolysing an aluminium alcoholate by heating a solution of the aluminium alcoholate having 3 to 4 moles of water per mole of aluminium in the alcoholate at a temperature below 80‹ C. and subjecting the resulting gel to solvent extraction. The aluminium alcoholate may suitably be obtained by the Ziegler process i.e. by reacting an olefin with an aluminium trialkyl compound and subsequent oxidation of the growth product of that reaction. The solvent may be the same for both the extraction and the hydrolysis, suitable specified solvents being aromatic hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, methylene chloride and dimethyl sulphoxide. Examples describe the preparation of decanol.
